From Language to Lifestyle: Bihar’s Bhojpuri Art Festival Highlights Cultural Riches

Bhojpuri culture, with its deep roots and expansive reach, stands as a testament to the rich heritage of India. Encompassing language, literature, folklore, various arts, music, dance, theater, attire, cuisine, lifestyle, and hospitality, Bhojpuri culture extends its influence across more than a dozen countries and touches the lives of over 300 million people. In the states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, Bhojpuri plays a crucial role in shaping the unique identity of the region.

Bhojpuri is more than just a means of communication; it is a refined and distinguished language studied and taught in numerous universities. Every year, hundreds of students undertake research in this language, further enhancing its academic significance. For Bhojpuri speakers, this language symbolizes their identity and pride, connecting them to the culture and traditions of their ancestors. The Bhojpuri film and music industries have carved out a distinctive place for themselves, both locally and nationally, contributing significantly to the cultural landscape.

Recognizing the importance of Bhojpuri language and culture, it is imperative to introduce the new generation to its distinctive characteristics. In this context, Sanskar Bharati, Bihar Pradesh, has planned a grand event—the Bhojpuri Art Festival (Bhojpuri Kala Utsav). This festival is scheduled to take place on September 14-15, 2024, at the Utsav Bhavan in Singhachapar, Bettiah.

The central theme of this festival revolves around the “Panch-Pran” of social transformation: prosperous families, social harmony, environmental conservation, indigenous lifestyle, and civic duties. Through this festival, not only will various forms of Bhojpuri language, art, and culture be showcased, but numerous initiatives will also be undertaken to connect the youth with this rich cultural heritage.

The festival will bring together 500 renowned Bhojpuri writers, musicians, singers, artists, art critics, and art lovers from Bihar and beyond. Over two days, these cultural icons will engage in discussions and showcase their talents. The Honorable Governor of Bihar, Shri Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, has also been invited to participate in this event.

Jalaj Kumar Anupam, Provincial Minister of Sanskar Bharati, North Bihar, stated that the objective of this event is to bring the glorious legacy and unique characteristics of Bhojpuri language and culture to the masses. Under the guidance of the Organizational Minister of Sanskar Bharati, Bihar Pradesh, Vedprakash Jee, the program is being coordinated by Dr. Diwakar Rai. Bhojpuri is a language with a known history dating back to the 8th century, boasting a wealth of literature in every genre.

This festival will feature many distinguished figures from the fields of art, literature, and music in Bihar, including Bharat Sharma Vyas, a renowned folk singer honored by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, Chandan Tiwari, Uday Narayan Singh, Ramprakash Mishra, Ankita Pandit, Dr. Brajbhushan Mishra, and Dr. Jaykant Singh Jai.

The Bhojpuri Art Festival (Bhojpuri Kala Utsav) promises to be a grand celebration of Bhojpuri culture, offering a platform for the preservation and promotion of this rich and vibrant heritage.
